2016 Kokoda Challenge

At 11am on 16 July, six teams represented Tullawong State High School in the Jim Stillman Cup as part of the Kokoda challenge.
This consisted of walking 48km through the Gold Coast hinterlands over some fairly mountainous terrain. Tullawong was represented by 24 students, 6 staff and supported by an additional thirteen people including 6 staff.
The conditions on the day were quite difficult with rain beginning to fall after the first hour and continuing all day and most of the night. This made walking in some sections quite tricky with a number of students and a couple of staff slipping over, some enjoying it more than others.
On the track the students were excellent in their behaviour and their attitude exemplifying the Kokoda Challenge values of Mateship, Courage, Endurance and Sacrifice. Examples of this include students carrying their team mate’s bag, helping support a team mate that had difficulty walking, cheering each other up when they were getting quiet and pushing themselves to their limits.
It was an incredibly successful event with 28 of the 30 starters completing their treks with two students having to withdraw after walking 30km due to medical advice.
The teams finished at the following times, including three teams finishing together:

Team             Finish time
TSHS 5           11:23pm
TSHS 6            1:04am
TSHS 2, 3, 4    2:40am
TSHS 1            6:20am
This year has been incredibly successful and rewarding for all of those involved in the 2016 Kokoda team.
We would especially like to say a big thank you to the parents, without your trust, dedication and support none of this would have been possible. We are already looking forward to 2017!
