2017 Kokoda Challenge

15/07/2017
2017 Kokoda Team
This year Tullawong State High School entered four teams in the Jim Stillman Cup on the 15th and 16th of July as part of the Kokoda Challenge. The Jim Stillman Cup is usually a 48km trek through the Gold Coast hinterlands, however it was extended to 52km due to damage caused by Cyclone Debbie. This year 16 students and 4 staff participated, as well as being supported by 10 support crew at the two major checkpoints over the event.
The teams finished at the following times:

Team                          Finish time
TSHS 3                       2:31am
TSHS 1                       3:02am
TSHS 2                       3:10am
TSHS 4                       5:55am

The event was held on the 15th and 16th of July, beginning at 11am from the Numinbah hall.  The course continued through the hinterlands and Army Land, finishing at Nerang after 52km. The conditions on the day were quite difficult with an unseasonably warm start, after lunch conditions worsened with a severe storm dumping torrential rain in a particularly difficult section of the track. Each of the teams showed incredible resilience pushing through mental and physical exhaustion to finish between 2am and 6am. Unfortunately, three students had to withdraw due to injuries sustained on the course. A special mention must be made to team leader Tim Mitchell, of Windaroo Valley State High School, who allowed TSHS 4 to walk with them and complete the event.
On top of all the trainings, planning and meetings each team is required to raise a minimum of $350 for the Kokoda Youth Foundation. This year the school raised almost $3500 in total, with three of the four teams finishing in the top 10 fundraisers for the Jim Stillman Cup. The Kokoda team would like to congratulate everyone who made this possible this year - the parents and family members driving to countless trainings, the Tullawong staff who gave up their afternoons and weekends to make this possible and especially the students who inspire us all with their commitment, determination and mateship.
