MORETON BAY LAW ASSOCIATION – 2016 SECONDARY SCHOOLS LEGAL CHALLENGE

Three teams from Tullawong ventured to the Redcliffe Magistrate Courthouse on Tuesday 10th May to compete in a mooting competition (debate) against three other schools from the region.  The competition is designed to provide students with a real life example of the work of a lawyer.

Tullawong Team One consisted of Chloe Mara, Abbie Reedman and Ebony Cummings.  They were up against the team from Albany Creek SHS.  Tullawong Team Two competed against Grace Lutheran College and was represented by Yazmin Leotta, Stephanie Fazio and Chloe Pettersson.  The final team from Tullawong, Team Three consisted of Rachel Cavanagh, Tahlia Allinson and Lahnie Cooke and were up against Deception Bay SHS.  The students from Tullawong SHS were sourced from the Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies classes who were also members of the Enterprise Academy run by Mrs Shona Hall (HOD Business/IT).  Some students are also studying Certificate IV in Justice Studies that is also offered by the school. The students were praised for their conduct both within the courtroom and at the courthouse by court staff.  It was lovely to accompany these students on the day.

The moots took about an hour each and Tullawong represented themselves and the school admirably.  They were given a case that involved a domestic violence incident that had exposed children of the couple to this violence.  Teams were allocated the role of either representing the applicant in the case or trying to convince the judges that their client (the respondent) had not committed domestic violence and did not need a temporary protection order to be made.  The judges on the day were all family law specialist lawyers and are part of the Moreton Bay Law Association.  Their comments included that they felt the students were better than some of the 3rd year law students they have seen.  Judges were impressed with the preparation the teams had displayed, their knowledge of domestic violence legislation and court etiquette.  The winning school was………. Tullawong SHS Team 1 consisting of Chloe Mara, Abbie Reedman and Ebony Cummings. We will have the president of the Law Association come to the school and present the winners with a trophy at assembly on May 31st.
